A collaborative effort between local historical societies and Ontario County have produced a rich inventory of existing and past historic barns in our region. Beginning with a pilot project in the Town of Canandaigua under the direction of Town Historian Ray Henry, volunteers have transcribed hundreds of field records and photographs into digital mapping format. The information will be an invaluable planning tool for communities, particularly in rapid growth sections near the Rochester-Metro area.
“Having had the chance to see the pictures of many barns during my data logging, I unexpectedly came to a more complete understanding of the enduring strength of these structures, and by inference, the bed rock character of the people who built and used them. Some of the most impressive were not well maintained structures, but those whose posts and beams remained sturdy and functional while their skins weathered and weakened.”
