2018 Harvesting Season Concludes

Posted on June 26, 2019 at 9:16 AM by Melissa Burke

***09/24/18 Content***
Harvesting has concluded for the 2018 season. Where access allows, the crew will pick up weed fragments collected into rows or piles at shore. The crew is working on a limited schedule through October 15. Though harvesting has concluded for the season, aquatic plants will continue to be cut by boat propellers and wind action, especially as plants begin to die as the growing season ends. Removal of vegetation washed into shore by wind and waves reduces nutrient recycling from these plants back into the lake. Reducing nutrients in Honeoye Lake is a lake management goal, consistent with the Honeoye Lake Watershed Management Plan and the Honeoye Lake HABs Action Plan. Residents are encouraged to rake up plant debris and contact the Aquatic Vegetation Management Program for pickup. Plant debris is composted at area farms, where the nutrient content serves in a positive way as a soil amendment. Of course, some residents compost the aquatic plant fragments for their own gardens. If you don’t have space or a need on your property , the AVMP crew is happy to assist.

For shoreline pickup, contact us at (585) 396-4458 or email betsy.landre@co.ontario.ny.us

Please note: There are some locations where the harvester is used to pick up weed fragments, particularly where loads are sizable (e.g., North Shore). If you see the harvester on the lake after September 20, it is being used for fragment pickup and not cutting. Harvesting (cutting) is concluded for 2018.

The crew wishes to thank all residents who participated in and/or assisted the program this year. Best wishes for beautiful fall season.
