Records and Archives Volunteer and Internship Opportunities
Our volunteers have become a valuable asset to our department. Not only have they accomplished projects that benefit genealogists and other researchers, they remind us about the importance of Ontario County history to not only residents but others who have an interest in historical records.
Volunteering provides opportunities to:
- Work on projects which will shape your knowledge of local history and genealogy
- Complete projects which reflect your interests and skills
- Learn how records centers and archives operate
- Learn about the preservation of records
- Gain fulfilling experiences with staff and other volunteers
- Work an average of four hours on a set schedule (hours per week are flexible)
- Are provided with an informal tour of the department and discuss projects/procedures to determine if working is still an interest to prospective volunteers
Records Management Internship Program
The Department of Records, Archives and Management Information Services (RAIMS) in Ontario County offers internship opportunities to students from accredited academic institutions in an effort to provide them with valuable hands-on experience that parallel and complement their academic studies.
Interns will engage in a variety of activities related to processing, managing, and interpreting archival collections. Individual intern assignments will vary based on goals and interests, but duties may include research, writing, electronic imaging, data entry, and preservation. Length of internship (hours, semester, year, etc.) may depend on the needs of the county, academic institution and/or project.
- Matriculation in a related field of study including history, library science, records management and archival or museum studies
- Basic computer and general administrative skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word and Excel
- Ability to work in a dusty environment and alongside cats
- Ability to lift heavy boxes up to 40 lb.
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time
- Strong organizing, researching and planning skills with attention to detail
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and excellent interpersonal skills
- Interest in records and archival management, historical research, and/or genealogy
- Basic knowledge of preservation and proper storage, handling and maintenance of various archival materials
CompensationThe internship opportunities will be unpaid. RAIMS will gladly extend letters of recommendation to interns who demonstrate professionalism and proficiency throughout their assigned tasks. College credit will be attained by current students only when approved by the academic institution. Interns must mention this intention on their application to ensure timely consultation between the department, Human Resources and the school.
